While the legality of ROMs is pretty unquestionable, I can’t help but think a little foray into some hacking and translating might be good for all the skills I really want to work on for the future. I have been playing around with hex editors and tile viewers today and I expect to announce a project within the next week.
Stay tuned!

Square-Enix broke my heart with the release of Final Fantasy 12. It was one of the biggest disappointments I have ever had. I have kept myself quite ignorant on FF13 so I could just go into it and let it be what it is without any expectations. I failed at that. You can see the new trailer here. You may have to right-click and “Save as” to get the file. At least, I did.

And I don’t mean that in terms of actual testicles, but rather the gumption to sit through horrifying scenes and be terrified by shit coming in through windows. I had fun when I played games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but I had to play them in the presence of others. While I have never played the Zettai Zetsumei games before (released as Disaster Report and Raw Danger in the States) I had heard enough positive remarks to give the demo for 3 a try. Based on this demo, I think I’m going to hunt for cheap copies of the previous two games and throw them in the queue.

Musings.
When I saw that Zettai Zetsumei 3 (the first one was released in the States as Disaster Report) had a PSP demo released today, I was hoping to have today’s article be about the game. Alas, that is not the case.
Back before I came to Japan, I hacked my PSP with custom firmware in order to play Playstation games on it. This was a feature I used for about a week until I forgot about it. Since then I have only continued to update it to the newer versions of this custom firmware out of habit and laziness to look up how to revert to the original. Plus, I figured I might find some use in it one day. But today when I go to play my demo, I’m just met with an error about not having the correct version of the firmware. As there is no higher firmware than what I have, I am simply out of luck. This hack which was supposed to bring more convenience has done nothing but. I cannot simply install the newer version overtop of this hack as that would make my PSP an even more useless hunk of plastic.
My iPhone presents a similar case. There is a hack that allows for a lot of different customization. Even one is available to solve the one problem I have with the iPhone. But, after reading pages of text about people having problems with their phone after the installation, I don’t want to risk it. I’ll take the inconvenience over the fact that I know for the most part my phone will continue to behave like it should.
It’s an annoyance that companies do not offer all the options in our technologies to make us completely happy, and while the unofficial solutions are there, I just don’t feel like I can trust them. I guess at the end of the day the mild inconveniences aren’t that big of a deal. Still, the principle of a solution being there and yet ignored is still irritating.

My copy of Nintendo Sound Selection Volume 2, Loud Music – Koopa came in. I still have no idea how to properly title these CDs and looking at the spine only confuses me further. It says “Koopa Loud Music Nintendo Sound Selection Vol.2″ so I guess Koopa is the artist if you want to think about it that way. Anyway, I have been listening to it since I got it yesterday afternoon.

Last time when I talked about turn based battles I got a little too mushy with the “it’s all how you feel, man” stuff which I’ll hope to avoid this time. Although the point remains that someone who doesn’t like them probably never will, I hope to at least offer some insight into why they are liked and why shouting out for their abolishment is rather silly.

Another week and even more surprising than the ever passage of time, another completed game. I’m making pretty good progress this year and I don’t even feel like I’m taking a hit to my social life. Time management is really key.

Organization is possibly not my strong point. Although, I have been getting better, but I do feel a little crazy to have to rely upon several calendars, my iPhone, my computers and various websites. But it helps. Catalogging my ever growing game collection was a pain in the ass, in general. Spreadsheets were decent enough, and for a while I used Delicious Library, although that felt restrictive in a few ways. A while back I found Gamepedia and now I don’t know what I’d do without it.

Club Nintendo is a program offered in most of the world, but only Japan seems to get the really awesome stuff. Since I buy so much Nintendo stuff, this past year, for free, I could have had a blinged out Mario Kart wheel or a stylish Mario hat to help myself get laid even less get delivered to my door. Alas, I forgot to actually make my decision in time so they gave me three calendars, either assuming I really want to watch the year pass by three times or that I actually have friends to give calendars to. The truth is that I actually have 8 calendars up in my apartment, so they were actually more useful to me than any of the other stuff. Just less blinged out.

I have been playing Final Fantasy 6 Advance and it has become increasingly clear to me that someone at Square Enix really wants to make a new 2D turn based Final Fantasy and they would do an amazing job of it. While many people scoffed at the Advance releases of 4 through 6, perhaps because of some of the downgrade to the music, but probably because of the fact there was no drastic changes.
So what is the reason for no game like this? Probably money.
