Convenience or Trouble?

When I saw that Zettai Zetsumei 3 (the first one was released in the States as Disaster Report) had a PSP demo released today, I was hoping to have today’s article be about the game. Alas, that is not the case.

Back before I came to Japan, I hacked my PSP with custom firmware in order to play Playstation games on it. This was a feature I used for about a week until I forgot about it. Since then I have only continued to update it to the newer versions of this custom firmware out of habit and laziness to look up how to revert to the original. Plus, I figured I might find some use in it one day. But today when I go to play my demo, I’m just met with an error about not having the correct version of the firmware. As there is no higher firmware than what I have, I am simply out of luck. This hack which was supposed to bring more convenience has done nothing but. I cannot simply install the newer version overtop of this hack as that would make my PSP an even more useless hunk of plastic.

My iPhone presents a similar case. There is a hack that allows for a lot of different customization. Even one is available to solve the one problem I have with the iPhone. But, after reading pages of text about people having problems with their phone after the installation, I don’t want to risk it. I’ll take the inconvenience over the fact that I know for the most part my phone will continue to behave like it should.

It’s an annoyance that companies do not offer all the options in our technologies to make us completely happy, and while the unofficial solutions are there, I just don’t feel like I can trust them. I guess at the end of the day the mild inconveniences aren’t that big of a deal. Still, the principle of a solution being there and yet ignored is still irritating.
